Chapter Thirty-One

"Kevik, put me down," Aisha demanded. "I'm ok."

"No," he growled, following behind the mages.

She smacked his chest. "I mean it. Your arm is pressing into a bruise!"

He stopped immediately, gently lowering her, but he didn't let go until she was stable on her feet. "I'm so sorry, Aisha," he said, looking her over. "How bad was it?"

"The big one just threw me around a bit," she assured him. "I pretended like everything hurt more than it did, and focused on how scared I was that you all wouldn't find me."

From behind her, a deep voice asked, "But he didn't cut you?"

She turned to find Treb standing there, the rest just behind him. They were all waiting - for her. Xel and Jade looked worried. The honest kind, like her mother always wore when she was out too late. The pirates shielding them kept glancing back, too. She didn't know why everyone seemed to care so much, and the truth was, it made her a little nervous.

"What's going on?" she asked.

Treb let out a relieved breath and wrapped his arms around her, hugging her very, very gently. "They all know you're a mage," he said. "Their mage, and they know what that means for Kevik, too. Are you honestly ok, Aisha?"

"I'm fine," she insisted. "I've been hurt worse falling down the stairs!"

Again, Treb sighed, but this time sounded even heavier. "By the gods, I was so worried," he admitted. Then he stepped back. "Sorry, Kevik."

"You're good, Treb," Kevik assured him. "I'm not really the jealous type."

"You will be when she starts casting."

"And speaking of casting," Aisha said, looking up at Jade. "What happened in there? Why are you leaving them alive?"

Jade smiled, and it wasn't the nice kind. "Because he isn't a mage anymore," she said. "Didn't you see it, Aisha? The moment Treb put that crystal-lined dagger into Dorin - the catalyst - the sparklies stopped coming from him? And when Civan buried his into the Spider's leg? Yeah, it all vanished. There was no more magic, and from the look of that dagger, I have a feeling his power is now trapped inside it."

Aisha's mouth slowly opened in awe. "Which means we can stop the evil mages?"

Xel nodded. "That's exactly what we're hoping."

"But the Spider?" Aisha demanded, gesturing back toward the throne room. "You're just going to let him be?"

"Oh no," Jade promised. "Right now, he's dealing with the worst punishment he could ever have. He's nothing more than an old man with nothing at all special about him, and a catalyst strong enough to make him pay for decades of abuse. And in a minute, I'm going to tell the people of this city that the man who killed their loved ones is now powerless."

"It's called justice," Civan added. "I'm willing to bet that the citizens will make him suffer worse than anything we could do, and we won't have to live with the guilt or memories of it."

"Ok," Aisha agreed. "But what about me?"

Kevik's attention snapped to her.
